penang 1,2,3

Chinese New Year is right around the corner, many will be travelling back to hometown for reunion or some are on vacation exploring many parts of Malaysia for holidays. One of the common hometowns/travels I can safely mention would be Penang, no doubt one of the best places to check out on food of different cuisines and historical places. To ease your food hunt as well as enhance your dining experience, here’s a list and guide to some of the cafes that are launched on Offpeak.my. Do share your Offpeak experience with your relatives back home and on a side note, safe travel!

1. Black Kettle

black kettle

Black Kettle, located at Beach Street is known for their amazing range of brunch assortments and freshly homemade breads as well as pastries where they display them at the bakery section. If you do find the cafe’s name very familiar, you probably have heard or visited a brunch place, Kettle Black in Melbourne. However, both cafes are of their own entity, just similar name.

Black Kettle serves egg Benedict, classic french toast, big breakfast, ricotta cheese pancakes, soft-shell crab and more to spoil you. Egg Benedict is definitely one of the recommended dishes by them. The dish consists of a poached egg on fluffy brioche along sauteed spinach, smoked salmon and thick, buttery Hollandaise sauce to finish it off nicely. Aside from dishes, they use award-winning coffee beans, ensuring good quality coffee to be served to customers. In terms of pricing, I believe the price is similar to other brunch places, average ranging from RM25-30.

Besides that, it brings out the absolute brunch dining experience with the unique interior design of the cafe. Overall, Black Kettle is on my must-go-visit brunch list when I’m in Penang and I suggest you to give it a go if you want your brunch cravings fixed!

2. Brown Pocket

brown pocket

Brown Pocket is another dessert cafe, located at 6th floor, Gurney Paragon specializing in liege waffles and pancakes. Their waffles are dense and chewy, made with a dough rather than a batter. The best part of their waffles is the pearl sugar that melts and caramelizes in the waffles creating a crunchy texture that is different than any other waffles. Brown Pocket infuses waffle element into their dishes, make it savoury or sweet. Both successfully captured many waffle fans’ hearts!

Also, they serve thick and spongy pancakes either with fruits compote, ice-cream or other irresistible toppings to complete it. Not to fret if you’re health- conscious person, they serve homemade yogurt parfait which is all you need! Delicious and guilt-free.

As for beverages, they serve great coffee and non-coffee such as chai latte, matcha latte and smoothies. The whole cafe’s interior made up of glass walls and high-ceiling, allowing natural sunlight in is my favorite part of the design. Perfect lighting to take Instagram-worthy pictures is definitely an added bonus!(; You should expect average price of RM 15. A place worth trying especially for waffles/pancakes lovers!

Interestingly, a coffee bar is set up where you have a chance to chat with the friendly baristas. Also, cucur udang(shrimp fritters) and gado-gado, a type of Indonesian version of salad are available. 5. Armor Restaurant

armor restaurant

Armor restaurant, located at Butterworth Business City Centre is known for their original american cuisine with reasonable price. And who says the little details don’t matter? I particularly love the tablecloth details, giving the American feel to dine in! Moving on. They serve western dishes starting from salad, classic burgers and sandwiches, main course, pasta, Armor’s pork ribs, Armor’s feast platter to desserts.

A few of the main courses includes Armor’s very own chicken chop with homemade black pepper sauce, American Fish N Chips which is beer-battered with tangy tartar sauce as a side, a local U.S favourite and lastly the dish that caught my eye right away is the German pork knuckle(RM32.8)! It’s imported knuckle with crispy and juicy meat, mustard sauce and gravy. Served with crispy fries and sauerkraut. Overall, a succulent dish which I would totally recommend.

Also, Armor serves pork ribs which are of 3 types of marinade eg. barbecue, honey mustard and smoky hot and spicy. It is up to your preference! And have I mentioned it’s a perfect place for family or extended relatives to dine in? They serve Armor’s feast platter which is easily shared by family and still satisfy everyone’s tummy. 6. Just Something Cafe

just something cafe

Just Something Cafe, second branch located at Jalan Raja Uda beside Petronas focuses more on good coffee and food rather than its atmosphere. They serve pastas consisting of chicken aglio-olio and chicken bolognese , sandwiches of different kinds eg. tuna & egg sandwich, club sandwich and salmon sandwich, salads eg. garden salad, chicken caesar salad and salmon salad, bagels of different fillings eg. cream cheese, salmon & scramble egg or ham & salad and all day brunch items such as English breakfast. Also, croissants are available which are made freshly right from the oven! Gotta love freshly-made pastries/bread as they release this therapeutic aroma from the moment its out from the oven, filling up the whole cafe.

The food they serve are delicious and of good quality. What I’m impressed the most is that is that they serve bagels! Not many places offer bagels. Bagel is a bread, traditionally shaped by hand into the form of ring which can be made similarly as a sandwich dish. Other than that, they serve good coffee and desserts. In terms of pricing, average pricing of RM20-25. So start your day with a good meal of great value!

9. Piknik Everyday Cafe

piknik everyday

Piknik Everyday Cafe, located at Pangsapuri Seri Melur is the latest venture by Pik Nik. The new sister cafe-Piknik Everyday Cafe serves the exact menu as Pik Nik but the interior has a more playful side, evidently seen from school bus and classroom element reliving high school memories. Piknik Everyday Cafe is known for their amazing waffles, savoury and sweet. I love classic waffles, hence Waffle Kosong(RM 6.9) is always my first pick! It’s salted butter on warm crisp waffles drizzled with maple syrup. Simplicity at its best!

There are savoury waffles compulsory with scramble egg+mayo+cheese with your preference topping eg. salmon, pork bacon or combo of both. Or compulsory with sunny side up+cheese+maple syrup along toppings of sausage and egg or pork bacon and egg. All savoury waffles are at RM12.9. They even serve waffle burger, not your typical burger with buns. You can choose beef, fish or chicken. As for sweet, waffle ice-cream is a hit as well! Crisp and aromatic waffles topped with premium ice-cream and fresh fruits drizzled with an amazing sauce, all at RM16.9.

Addition to it, hotdogs, snacks eg. fries, tortilla, fried dory or tempura and salads are available for people craving for light meals. However, do take note the sausages for the hotdogs are ordinary, not gourmet ones average at RM11. Picnic Salad with a dressing you can go with(free to pick) and +add on of bacon or salmon for RM6. Last but not least, they serve coffee, yogurt smoothies,  juice and alcoholic drinks. If you’re on a hunt for good waffles, Piknik Everyday Cafe should be on your must-try list.
